Landfill: Closure Management

Overview
This two-day course takes leaners through the intricate processes involved in the whole life journey of a landfill.

Closing a landfill is the starting point for a landfill’s final life stage before full stabilisation. As this process lasts for many decades, it requires thorough thinking around environmental responsibilities and technical considerations. Managing a long aftercare period and selecting an optimal and safe strategy for re-development and re-use of a closed landfill involves an exploratory solution based approach – problem solving methods based on practical experience and knowledge that this course introduces to.

This course provides understanding of:

  • The fate of a landfill and its environmental control infrastructure
  • The final stages of landfill life - closure and permit surrender
  • The step-by-step complex process of planning and executing landfill closure
  • Overcoming closure and re-development constraints
  • The closure process in a simple, systematic and logical way
  • Principles of maximising economical offset or return from a closed landfill
  • The link between landfills, circular economy, sustainable development, and climate change.
This course provides participants with an opportunity to undertake a real-life based exercise on landfill closure preparation, as well as being a platform for exchanging views and sharing practical experience.

It is strongly advised that all learners participate in the Landfill: Understanding the Conceptual Site Model course prior to taking part in this course.

Who should participate?
The course is suitable for all participants wishing to expand their knowledge about landfill closure and aftercare, such as landfill operators, owners, planners, developers and regulators.

The course is suitable for beginners as well as experienced practitioners, and to those with and without an engineering background.
