Reminder for Businesses to Prepare as ‘Simpler Recycling’ Begins
With the implementation of the Government's ‘Simpler Recycling’ policy for businesses commencing today, CIWM is reminding businesses and their waste service providers across England to ensure they are prepared for the new requirements. This significant step marks an important moment in the UK's transition from a “throwaway society” to a strong recycling culture, and will have a substantial positive impact on national recycling levels.
As detailed in the Government's recent policy statement, ‘Simpler Recycling’ aims to standardise waste collections, moving away from the confusing patchwork of local systems. Businesses are now required to arrange for the collection of core recyclable waste streams, including glass, metal, plastic, paper, card, and food waste. This initiative is a key component of the UK's circular economy strategy, designed to boost recycling rates and reduce environmental impact.
This development also follows an announcement from Defra’s Steve Reed last week, outlining a roadmap for the Circular Economy Taskforce to drive a stronger circular economy for the UK.
CIWM recognises that this transition may present challenges for some businesses, and has issued a comprehensive member briefing note to our membership community to provide guidance and support. We encourage all businesses to familiarise themselves with the new regulations and take the necessary steps to comply.
"The commencement of 'Simpler Recycling' for businesses is an important step for the UK's resource and waste management sector," says Dan Cooke, Director of Policy, Communications and External Affairs. "This policy has the potential to significantly increase recycling rates and drive us closer to a circular economy. We urge all businesses to embrace these changes and work collaboratively with their waste service providers to ensure a smooth transition."
CIWM is committed to supporting its members and
the wider business community throughout this process. For any queries regarding
the ‘Simpler Recycling’ requirements, please visit Simpler
