Experienced Practitioner Route

Member (MCIWM) Chartered Waste Manager

This route into membership is designed for those who have considerable experience within the waste industry but have no formal qualifications.

Entry Requirements

Minimum of five years relevant experience in the waste industry.

Application to include an expanded supporting statement as specified below.

Applicants should complete an application form 
The application should include:
-Copies of any relevant education or training certificates
-A full CV highlighting waste management experience
-Expanded supporting statement
When this information is received and references have been obtained from sponsors, all candidates will be required to attend a professional interview. Full guidance notes on the content of the interview will be sent to applicants when a date and venue has been arranged.

Requirements for Expanded Supporting Statement

This statement should be of up to approximately 4,000 words in length and candidates should demonstrate how they meet the following key competencies:-

Knowledge and understanding of the wastes management Industry. 

To include:
 -Current and Impending Legislation
-Waste Strategy
-Hot Topics and Current Affairs 
-Structure of the Industry and who does what

Ability to analyse and evaluate problems and develop practical solutions

- Give examples within own work of how these competencies are met
- Demonstrate creativity, innovation and Imagination

Leadership in the management of waste giving examples of:-

- Team management
- Project Management
- Motivation
- Mentoring and support
- Promotion of sustainable waste management

Effective Interpersonal Skills giving examples of:-

- Written Communication
- Presentations
- Engaging information and giving advice
- Chairing meetings and committee representation
- Technical publications and reports written

A personal commitment to professional standards recognising obligations to society, the profession and the environment. Give examples of:-

- Promotion of sustainable waste management
- Engagement with key stakeholders
- Working within legislative and regulatory frameworks
- Personal development and training

In order to illustrate how these competencies are met candidates should use examples of projects they have worked on.  These competencies will then be explored further at the professional interview.
